With Walker, Catoosa and 15 other counties declared disaster areas and flood warnings in effect until Tuesday afternoon for many areas, Dade County residents can count themselves lucky to have avoided many of the problems caused by recent rain storms. Schools in the county were able to hold classes and widespread flooding was not an issue, but emergency personnel were still kept busy with weather related problems.
Rain caused a landslide Monday morning along Scenic Highway just before Covenant College on Lookout Mountain. The first report of the landslide came in as a minor car wreck caused by a landslide at 6:20 a.m. When Dade County deputies arrived on scene the landslide was about four feet deep and covered the entire road. A bulldozer and the fire department were dispatched to help clean off the road, which was finally cleared just before noon.
Dade County authorities monitored roads Monday and Tuesday for flooding and closed Sells Lane, the 2200 block of Mason Road, Creek Road from the 1300 block to the 1700 block and Lookout Creek Road.
All of the roads were opened Tuesday morning except for Creek Road near the hang gliding landing zone.
Workers also dealt with downed trees and power lines, but no major issues according to E-911 operators.
