The Dade County Wolverine basketball team picked up a pair of sub-region wins last week as they traveled to Summerville to face the Chattooga Indians and to Calhoun to face Gordon Central.
On Tuesday night at Chattooga the Wolverines took the lead on a pair of three point shots by Travis Core and Andrew Houts to start the game and never trailed.
While the Indians battle the entire first half they were never able to overtake the Wolverines.
The Wolverines would build a lead of nine points only to see the Indians battle back to within three on several occasions.
At the end of the first half the Wolverines were up 33-28.
The Wolverines started the second half with seven straight points to go up 40-28 and that was it for the Indians.
From that point on they were never able to get closer than seven points the remainder of the game.
When the final buzzer sounded the Wolverines came away with a big 84-65 win.
Chattooga had been the leader in 7-AA North after their win over Calhoun so the win was big for the Wolverines, putting them in a tie for first place.
Travis Core led the Wolverines with 33 points. Andrew Houts scored 27 and Jake Bell finished the night with 14.
Core also had 10 rebounds and 6 assist and Taylor Mai grabbed 8 rebounds.
The Wolverines hit 10 three point shots with Bell hitting 4, Houts 3 and Core 3.
Friday night’s game against Gordon Central was post-phoned until Saturday due to the snow.
On Saturday afternoon the Wolverines made quick work of the Gordon Central Warriors.
Jumping out to a fast start the Wolverines ran up 37 first quarter points to take a 37-17 lead.
Andrew Houts hit the first shot of the game and broke Chad Reeves career scoring record for Dade County High School. Reeves’ record was 2,174.
The Wolverines continued their hot shooting in the second quarter and at the end of the first half led 67-39.
By the end of the third quarter the Wolverines had built a 97-53 lead and the game was finished out by the Wolverine bench. Those players played hard and show that the Wolverines will be a team to contend with for years to come.
Andrew Houts led the Wolverines with 34 points, giving him 2,207 for his career with several games left. The state AA record is 2,411. If the Wolverines go very deep into the state playoff he stands a good chance of breaking that record before he is finished. Good luck Andrew!
Travis Core finished the night with 18 points. Houston Moon scored 17, Andrew Reid finished with 12 and Cole Gossett with 10.
The Wolverines hit 16 three point shots in the game with Houts hitting 8, and Moon 5. Core had 10 assist and 7 rebounds.
This week will be big for the Wolverines as they hosted Calhoun on Tuesday night. The Yellow Jackets gave the Wolverines their first loss in early January so the Wolverines will be out for revenge.
On Friday the Wolverines will travel to Adairsville and to Sonoraville the following Tuesday.
The final regular season game will be at home Feb.12th when the Wolverines host the Chattooga Indians.
The Region 7-AA tournament gets underway at Georgia Highlands College in Rome Feb. 15th.
The Sentinel will have the complete bracket as soon as it becomes available.
