The Dade County High School Wolverine football team picked up their first win of the season Friday night when the defeated the Armuchee Indians 20-17 before a homecoming crowd at Wolverine Field.
Dade took the lead in the second quarter when Jon Tucker kicked a 22-yard field goal to put them on top 3-0. That field goal would be the only points of the first half as the defenses dominated play.
Midway through the third quarter the Indians took the lead on a 5-yard touchdown pass from Jacob Farmer to Austin Gurley. The Devin Crowley kick put the visitor on top 7-3.
The Wolverines wasted little time in responding to the Indian score. Luke Riddle found a wide open Travis Nunley for a 25 yard touchdown pass just about a minute and a half later as Dade regained the lead 10-7. Jon Tucker kicked the extra point.
Armuchee didn’t pack it in however and scored again just before the end of the third quarter when Crowley kicked a 32 yard field goal to tie the game 10-10.
Early in the fourth quarter the Wolverines would take the lead for good when Jon Tucker kicked a 35-yard field goal for the 13-10 lead.
On the Indians next possession Jarrett Page recovered an Indian fumble and ran in from 20 yards out for a touchdown. Tucker kicked the extra point and the Wolverines had a 20-10 lead with 9:13 remaining in the game.
Armuchee came back again, this time on a 68-yard touchdown pass from Farmer to Tanner Boyd to cut the Dade lead to 20-17.
The Wolverine defense shut down the visiting Indians the rest of the way and they claimed their first win of the season 20-17.
Nunley led the offense with 86 yards rushing on 11 carries while Luke Riddle had 69 yards on 10 carries and completed four of six passes for 66 yards.
The Wolverine offense produced 234 yards of total offense in the win, 168 rushing yards.
Hayden Johnson who had 11 tackles and one assist led the defense and while Damien Pickering had six tackles and one assist.
Kolbie Gass had five tackles, one assist and one tackle for loss while Blake Lynn had five tackles and three assists. Jarrett Page had three tackles, one assist and a fumble recovery for a touchdown and Roy McMahan had three tackles and four assist.
This week the Wolverines will travel to Chatsworth to face Murray County. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
