As the Wolverine basketball team returned to the action last week after the Christmas break everyone expected them to pick up where they left off, scoring and winning in typical Wolverine style.

The game at Calhoun against the Yellow Jackets had the makings of being just that with the Wolverines taking the early lead.

Up by two at the end of the first quarter, 19-17, the Wolverines extended the lead in the second quarter and lead 39-30 at the end of the first half.

The Wolverines ran into trouble in the second half however as the Yellow Jackets begin to cut into the lead and Dade didn’t seem to have an answer.

Playing with foul trouble the Wolverines found themselves in trailing 53-50 at the end of the third quarter.

The Yellow Jackets continued to pour on the pressure in the fourth quarter and came away with a big 78-75 region win on their home court.

Clynt Bell led all scorers with 36 points, hitting five three–point shots.

Cole Birchfield finished the night with 14 points and was the only other Wolverine to score in double digits.

Dustin Howard finished the night with 9 rebounds to lead the team in that area.

The loss was the Wolverines first region loss of the season.

On Saturday afternoon Dade hosted Murray County’s Indians in another region game and wasted little time taking control.

With the game tied 6-6 with 3:30 minutes into the first quarter the Wolverine went on an 8-0 run to go up 14-6 and they never looked back.

Murray was down 21-9 at the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter the Indians tried to rally but the Wolverines kept up the pressure and at the end of the first half led 36-29.

The Wolverines usually have a big third quarter and this game was no exception as they outscored the Indians 21-8 to take a 57-37 lead.

The two teams swapped baskets in the fourth quarter and when the final buzzer sounded Dade had its 11th win of the year and third region win against only one loss. Their overall record is 11-3.

Bell again led the Wolverine scoring with 30 points, hitting eight three–point shots.

Howard had a big night with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Birchfield finished with 13 points and 7 steals.

The Wolverines hosted Chattooga’s Indians last night and will travel to Pepperell on Friday.

The Wolverines next home game will be Jan. 15 when they host the Coosa Eagles.
