JAMES COX

James Cecil Cox, 56, of Sulphur Springs, Ala., passed away Feb. 12. He was assistant chief of the Valley Head Police Department, Valley Head, Ala. He was a member of the Alabama Fraternal Order of Police and was a member of the Sulphur Springs Baptist Church.

Mr. Cox was preceded in death by his father, James Preston Cox.

Survivors include his wife, Peggy Daniel Cox, Valley Head; son, James (Casey) Cox, Valley Head; mother, Joan Cox, Valley Head; two brothers, Tommy Cox and Dale (Diane) Cox, Valley Head; grandchildren, Kara Cox and Austin Cox, Valley Head; also several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Feb. 14 in the funeral home chapel with Bro. Richard Byers officiating. Family will receive friends from 11 a.m., until service time. Interment will be in Head Springs Cemetery.

MANDY MEEKER

Mandy Jane Meeker, 86, of Henagar, Ala., passed away Feb. 8 at Highland Medical Center.

She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Dolly Green Sanders; brother, Herman Sanders.

Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law, Jerry and Sandra Meeker of Scottsboro, Ala., Teddy and Tina Meeker of Stevenson, Ala.; daughter, Cathy Pierce of Smyrna; brother, Pete Sanders of Henagar, Ala.; sister, Shirley Ray of Pisgah, Ala.; seven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Feb. 10 in the Kerby Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Keith Pierce officiating.

Interment was in Henagar Community Cemetery.

SAM NORWOOD, JR.

Samuel “ Sam” Oliver Norwood, Jr., 71, of Kitchener, Ontario, Canada, formerly of Wildwood, passed away Feb. 8. He was a 1959 graduate of Rossville High School. Prior to moving to Canada, he was employed by Rossville Yarn and Dye for a number of years. He worked for Krass Carpets from 1975 until his retirement in 1998.

He was preceded in death by his wife, JoAnn Lewis Norwood; parents, Samuel Oliver and Nina Wright Norwood and brother, Charles Edward Norwood.

Survivors include his daughter, Robin McAlister, Kitchener, Ontario; son, Kevin (Christine) Norwood, Kitchener, Ontario; grandchildren, Michael Norwood, T.J. and James McAlister, Metahya Munn and Ayin Munn; great-granddaughter; brother, Calvin LeeVoy Norwood, Chehalis, Washington; sister, Tabitha (Bobby) Ryan, Trenton; also several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m., Feb. 15 in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Jerry Atkins officiating. Interment will be in Lakewood Memory Gardens South.

The family will receive friends Thursday from 4–9 p.m.

LUTHER SMITH

Luther Benjamin Smith, 76, of Bryant, Ala., passed away, Feb. 10. He retired from Colonial Bakery of Chattanooga with 31 years of service. He enjoyed farming. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Hollis Smith; daughter, Sherry Holder; son, Stephen Smith; sister, Virginia Plumley; brothers, Marvin Smith and Arthur Smith; great–grandson, Tallon Grissom.

Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Christine Smith; daughter, Krysta Mangrum, Ringgold; son, Luther Benjamin (Bengy) Smith, Bryant; sisters, Brenda Pickett, East Brainerd, Tenn., and Mary Grace Shrader, Bryant; brother, Coy Smith, Bryant; grandchildren, Wesley Bridges, Heather, Batson, Tabatha Holder, Justin Holder, Valaree Holland, Natalie Allison, Daltyn Smith, Kacer Mangrum; 11 great–grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m., EDT today in the funeral home chapel with Brother Tommy Dawson officiating. Interment will be in Oak Lawn Memorial Park.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. today.

KENNETH TOWNSON

Kenneth Townson, 84, of Bryant, Ala., passed away Feb. 4. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, member of TAG Motor Club and helped organize the Tri-Community Volunteer Firefighters. He was a member of Straightway Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Guy and Virgie Townson; brother, Royce Townson; and sister, Reba Manson.

Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Martila Townson; daughter, Sheila Blevins; adopted daughter Vickie and Jerry Townson; sisters, Elva Townson, Lottie Douglas, Marie Kennemore, Judy Knight all of Bryant, Ala., Betty Cloud of Higdon, Ala.; brothers, Freeman Townson, Jimmie Townson, Jerry Townson all of Bryant, Ala.; grandson, Brian and Rosie Blevins; great-grandchildren, Madelyn Blevins, Ethan Blevins and Madison Hensley.

Funeral services were held Feb. 7 in the Moore Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Gary Bone and Rev. Jim Hixon officiating.

Interment was in Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens with military honors provided by the Sequatchie Valley Honor Guard.

MICHAEL TRAFFANSTEDT

Michael Clint Traffanstedt, 39, of Fort Payne, Ala., passed away Feb. 5 at Marshall Medical Center South.

Survivors include his wife, Tonya Traffanstedt of Fort Payne, Ala.; son, Hunter Traffanstedt of Sylvania, Ala.; parents, Steve and Vickie Traffanstedt of Fort Payne, Ala.; grandmother, Myrlean Traffanstedt of Fort Payne, Ala.; step-daughter, Alex Kilgro of Centre, Ala.; sisters and brothers-in-law, Ronda and Scott Harper of Fort Payne, Ala., Christy and Greg Whitaker of Henagar, Ala.; nephews, Dusty Harper, Dylan Harper, Teauge Whitaker; nieces, Lexi Whitaker and Maddy Torrence.

Funeral services were held Feb. 9 in the Kerby Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Marlin Williamson and Rev. Kevin Gurley officiating.

Interment was in Rainsville Church of Christ Cemetery.

MARTHA WALDEN

Martha Jane Walden, 73, of Trenton passed away Feb. 9. She was of the Church of God faith.

She is survived by her husband, Elmer D. Walden, Sr., of Trenton; daughters, Teresa (Rich) Bethune, Debra Terrell, Shannon Leverett, and Tabitha (Trisha) Walden, all of Trenton; sons, Donald (Ann) Green, Johnny Walden, Elmer D. Walden, Jr., and Ronald (Rita) Walden, all of Trenton; sisters, Linda Hamby of Soddy Daisy, Tenn., and June Jones of Murpheesboro, Tenn.; brother, Jimmy Hickman of Lupton City, Tenn.; also several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were Feb. 11 in the funeral home chapel. Interment was in Lake Hills Memorial Gardens.

LEON YOUNG

Edward Leon Young, 61, of Higdon, Ala., passed away Feb. 11.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Norman and Lucille Young and brother, Rickey Young.

Survivors include by his wife of 38 years, Benita Young; daughter, Brooklyn Young; daughters and son in laws, Leann Young and Richard McFalls and Vickie Young and David Lusher; son and daughter in law, Rickie and Kayla Young and Leon Young, Jr.; sister and brother in law, Zondra and J.E. Devries; seven grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were, Feb. 12, in the funeral home chapel with Brother Gary Nix officiating. Burial was in Browns Gap Cemetery.
