The Dade County
Board of Education held its regular monthly meeting Monday night.
Superintendent Shawn Tobin gave special recognition to Dade Middle School
students and FBLA Club members Jed Henderson and Dylan Knox and DMS teacher and
club sponsor Pamela Stone at the start of the meeting.
Linda Wilson,
vice chair of the Dade County Library Board gave a presentation, including a
video to “give you a little insight about what people use the library for,” she
told the Board.
After the video
Wilson explained their funding issues and reported the city of Trenton was
funding them this year for $24,000. They didn’t fund them last year.
Private
donations helped keep the library going last year and those totaled some
$31,000.
In closing
Wilson asked the board for funding this year of $18,863. Last year the BOE cut
all funding to the library.
No action was
taken at the meeting but it will be discussed as board members work on the
upcoming budget.
The item of
most interest during the meeting was the approval of the 2013-2014 School
Calendar.
The recommended
calendar has very few changes from last year with school set to begin Sept. 3
and end on May 30. Fall break will be Oct. 4-7 and students and faculty will
get a full week off for Thanksgiving and two weeks for Christmas. Spring break
will be March 24-28.
The Board
approved the calendar with a unanimous vote.
Other items on
the agenda were approval of the Georgia Education Cooperative and approving the
sale of a surplus cooler/refrigerator.
Other action
items included approving two policy changes that had been open for the required
30 days.
The Board then
went into executive session and returned to approve the following personnel:
Hire – Jennifer
Woods, Golf Coach; Janet Bradford, Paula Brown and Jacqueline Wooten, cafeteria
staff, substitutes.
Resignations:
Michelle Moore, cafeteria staff; Ken Pennington, bus driver; and Myka Hicks,
teacher.
Retiring: Susan
Millican, effective for 2013-2014 school year.
The Board also
approved coaching supplements for next year and they remain the same as the
past few years.
