The Dade County
Wolverines opened the 2013 football season Friday night when they hosted the
North Sand Mountain Bison.
were hoping to avenge an opening game loss to the Bison last year at North Sand
Mountain and a large crowd was on hand to catch all the action.
It proved to be
a night of self-–inflicted mistakes for the Wolverines as early in the first
quarter Bison drives were extended by off side’s penalties against the
Wolverines on short yardage situations.
extended the first scoring drive for the Bison that Derek Alonzo put the
finishing touch on with a 12–yard field goal giving them a 3-0 lead.
With the Dade
offense struggling to put a drive together NSM in the mean time would score
again just before the end of the first quarter.
Cody McBryar scored on a 5–yard run and the Alonzo kick made it 10-0.
continued to dominate play in the second quarter and while the Wolverine
defense kept them out of the end zone Alonzo kicked another field goal, 24
yards, with 38 seconds remaining in the first half for a 13-0 lead.
On the Bison
kickoff Zac Freeman raced 80 yards for Dade’s first score of the night and with
25 seconds remaining in the first half the Wolverines were back in the game,
only down 13-6. The try for the extra point hit the upright and was no good.
The two teams
swapped possessions in the third quarter with neither team mounting a serious
threat and heading into the final eight minutes the score remained 13-6 Bison.
Early in the
fourth quarter Brett Swader scored on a 15–yard run to get the Wolverines
within one and a Dan Hall kick tied the game at 13-13.
The Bison then
marched down the field and scored when McBryar passed to a wide-open Bailey
Guffey with 6:28 remaining in the game for a 25–yard touchdown. The Alonzo kick
was blocked and the score was 19-13.
The next time
the Wolverines got the ball it looked like they might pull the game out as a
couple of long runs put them in great field position.
Another big run
by Swader ended when he fumbled the ball inside the 10–yard line and NSM
Dade was able
to stop the Bison and get the ball back with 57.8 seconds remaining in the game
but was unable to score and fell to the Bison for the second year in a row,
and Zac Freeman led the Wolverine offense with 82 and 79 yards respectively
with each scoring a touchdown.
finished the night with 21 yards and Stephen McCormick was two of six passing
for 8 yards.
McBryar led the
Bison attack with 10 of 23 passing for 159 yards and he ran the ball 11 times
for 83 yards. Dex Walsh had 12 carries for 60 yards and caught four passes for
had three catches for 67 yards.
For the night
the visiting Bison had 15 first downs to the Wolverines 7. The Wolverines
outgained the Bison 189 yards to 143 but the Wolverines managed only 8 passing
yards while the visiting Bison had 159.
NSM won the
total yards battled as well accumulating 302 yards to Dade’s 197.
This week the
Wolverines will be traveling to North Murray for another non-region game. Game
time will be 7:30 p.m.
