Carly Stephens hits a long home run in state tournament action last
week when the Lady Wolverines hosted Bowden. Stephens had six hits in
six at bats as the Lady Wolverines defeated the visitors from Region
5 by scores of 11-3 and 11-0. This week the Lady Wolverines advance
to the Sweet Sixteen and travel to Wesleyan for a best of three series.

The Dade County
Lady Wolverine softball team made quick work of their first round foe last week
when they hosted Bowden, the third seed from Region 5AA.
In the first
game Dade was held scoreless in the first inning but their bats came alive in
the second inning.
led off the inning with a single and Madison Gossett then bunted for a single and
when Bowden threw the ball away both runners scored to put the Lady Wolverines
on top 2-0 but they added three more runs in the inning on a RBI single by Ali
Birchfield and a two RBI single by Madison Lacy to put them on top 5-0 after
scoreless third inning the visitors from Bowden scored three runs on two walks
and two hits to make it a 5-3 game.
Wolverines scored again in the fourth to make it 6-3 and then put the game away
in the fifth.
single by Stephens was followed by a single by Gossett, an error and a RBI
fielder’s choice by Macayla Ginn got things started for the Lady Wolverines.
A walk and a
big three RBI double by Birchfield made it 10-3 and an error let another run
score to end the game with the Lady Wolverines on top 11-3.
Wolverines pounded out 11 hits in the five inning game, shortened by the mercy
three hits, Birchfield, Cari Pierce and Gossett all had a pair of hits and Lacy
and Ginn each had a hit in the winning effort.
The second game
followed and after two innings of play the Lady Wolverines were on top 1-0 on a
long home run by Stephens.
Wolverines put the game away in the top of the third inning when they scored
four runs on five hits, including a two RBI triple by Hailey Gass.
Wolverines added another run in the fourth and a fifth run fifth ended the game
with the Lady Wolverines again winning a mercy rule shortened game 11-0. The
big blow in the fourth came off the bat of Lacy when she hit a grand slam home
Bowden tried to
rally in the bottom of the fifth but left two runners stranded.
Stephens led the Lady Wolverines with three hits each and they each hit a home
run in the game. Birchfield and Gass had two hits each.
both games and recorded 14 strikeouts and only gave up four hits.
Stephens had a
big day picking up six hits in six at bats and two RBI’s. Lacy was four for six
with a grand slam home run and nine RBI’s.
Wolverines now advance to the Sweet 16 and will be traveling to Wesleyan High
School in Norcross today. The winner of the best of three will advance to the
state tournament finals next week in Columbus.
Wolverines are looking to defend last year’s state championship.
Lady Wolves finished the season as the top team in Region 5AA and currently
sport a 21-8 record.
