Political Debates
Do you plan to attend any of the political debates planned throughout the county in the coming weeks?

By: Ted Camp, Silent Word Ministries

I read of a young preacher named Augustus Toplady who was taking a walk through the English countryside. A sudden storm soon arose. He looked for safety from the storm. He soon saw a wide rock formation with an opening inside a cleft. He ran within the cleft of the rock until the storm passed.

As he waited in the cleft of the rock he began to think about how he also needed a shelter in the storms of his life. He found a piece of paper and began to write the famous song “Rock of Ages.”

In 1775 he wrote the song during the storm as he rested in the cleft of the rock. This hymn has been a source of strength for Christians ever since. There are times during our storms that we also need a hiding place. When you are in a storm, don’t stand in the storm, but run to the cleft of the rock until the storm passes over. The Lord may not still your storm, but He can still you in the storm.

There was a time, as pastor, when I was discouraged. During the night a storm raged outside. The thunder woke my son and he cried for me. I ran to him and held him. I said, “It’s alright son, daddy is here.”

In the darkness the Lord spoke to my heart and said, “It’s alright son, your Heavenly Father is here.”

I wept in the darkness as the storm and my discouragement passed. Maybe you are now facing the storms of finances, health, pain, family problems, depression, discouragement or loneliness. Do you feel you need a place to hide for shelter?

The Lord asked His disciples, “Will you go away also?” They answered, “To whom shall we go thou hast the Words of eternal life” (John 6:68).

As one woman said, “Well, it is time to go and wake Him up.” The person said, “What do you mean?” She said, “During the storms the disciples always ran to Him and woke Him up.” She said, “I am having my storm. It’s time to go wake Him up.”

Are you in a storm? Then run to Him for shelter. “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble” (Psalms 46:1).

Do you need a very present help? Well, run to the cleft of the rock and sing, “Rock of ages, cleft for me. Let me hide myself in Thee...” Don’t be shy, go ahead and sing it loudly, “Rock of ages, cleft for me. Let me hide myself in Thee...” Did you do it? Keep singing and staying in the cleft of the Rock until your storm passes over. These are Words of Wisdom.
