Thanks-giving season let us each express gratitude for and if possible, to
someone who has been a blessing to us.
Today I am
praising God for teachers He has brought into my life. Let me share an
experience I had when I was 13 years old.
In 1950 when I
started the eighth grade at East Lafollette School, Mrs. Hollingsworth was our
teacher. Being a Yankee from Wisconsin I was not at home with many of the
cultural expressions or practices. Therefore, I was having some issues with my
class work. One morning, when the class was given a recreation break, Mrs.
Hollingsworth asked me to stay behind. She then shared with me an assignment
that I had given her. It had red marks all over it. She handed me the paper and said, “You are
too intelligent to give me this kind of work. I will not accept it!”
For me that was
a “game changer.” Why? Having my potential to achieve affirmed had a much
greater impact on my life than the reprimand I experienced for my poor effort
on the assignment.
I cannot contact
my teacher; because she has long ago gone on to reach her higher potential as a
child of God. But I can honor her with
this Faith Story, and maybe the living Christ will help you to praise Him for
one or more very special teachers who have helped you to discover and
experience the difference it makes when we respond to Jesus’ invitation, “Come
and follow me and I will make you.”
