Dade's Mikey Williams puts two more on the board for the Wolverines during Saturday's hard-fought contest with Calhoun's Yellow Jackets. Dade overcame Calhoun 105-103 but it took four overtime periods to do so. Williams finished the night with 17 points.

The Dade County High School Wolverine basketball team played its first game of the New Year Saturday afternoon and it turned out to be a classic battle with region foe Calhoun. This will be the last season facing Calhoun as a region foe as they will be moving up to AAA after this school year.

The Wolverines jumped out to an early lead 11-2 in the first three minutes of the game. The visiting Yellow Jackets couldn’t keep up with Dade’s hot shooting early and by the end of the first quarter the Wolverines were up 17-14.

The Wolverines looked like they might run away from the Yellow Jackets with 3:51 remaining in the first half when they built their lead to 37-19.

Calhoun would hold the Wolverines to just two points the remainder of the first half to get back in the game. At the end of the half Dade was up 39-34.

Early in the third quarter the Yellow Jackets cut Dade’s lead to a single point, 41-40, but back–to–back three–point shots by Nic Gaddis and Clynt Bell made it 47-40.

The Wolverines answered every rally by the Yellow Jackets in the third quarter when they would get to within one or two points but was never able to overtake Dade.

At the start of the fourth quarter the Wolverines were up 63-56 having led the entire game but the Yellow Jackets continued to fight and a five point spurt with 2:15 remaining in the game tied the score, 69-69.

Baskets by Bell and Brady Mai gave the Wolverines a four point lead but Calhoun scored the final four points to send the game to overtime, 73-73.

The Yellow Jackets took their first lead of the night at the start of overtime and with 1:28 remaining led Dade 81-75,

Two free throws by Gaddis and a three point shot by Bell cut the Calhoun lead to 81-80 with 54 seconds remaining. Then two free throws by the Yellow Jackets put them up 83-80.

Mikey Williams hit a three point shot with 33 seconds remaining to tie the game and the Yellow Jackets then hit two free throws with 16 seconds remaining before Gaddis hit two free throws to tie the game again with nine seconds left and send the game to a second overtime.

The second overtime ended with the teams tied 90-90 sending the game to a third overtime.

Again the two team’s swapped baskets and the third overtime ended with the teams tied 96-96.

At the start of the fourth overtime the Wolverines jumped out to a six point lead, 102-96, with 1:31 remaining but the Yellow Jackets rallied back and cut the lead to 102-101 with 49 seconds remaining.

Dade then hit three free throws to go up 105-101 and the Yellow Jackets hit a pair of free throws with 1.2 seconds left but the Wolverines held on for an amazing 105-103 four overtime win.

Bell led the all scorers with 47 points with Williams scoring 17, Gaddis 16 and Mai 13.

Calhoun was led by Chandler Curtis and Austin Byrd with 26 points each.

During the Christmas break the Wolverines played in the Jon Loden Holiday Classic at Midway High School in Kingston, Tenn.

In the opening game the Wolverines defeated Cumberland Gap 70-55 as Bell scored 26 points, Williams 16 and Gaddis 11.

Next up for the Wolverines was Cocke County and they jumped out to an early lead on the Wolverines that they were never able to overcome.

Dade fell by a final score of 83-73.

Bell led the Wolverines with 37 points, the only Wolverine to score in double figures.

In their final game of the tournament the Wolverines defeated Midway by a score of 101-63.

Gaddis led Dade with 22 points followed by Mai and Bell with 19 points each.

This week the Wolverines will be in action Friday when they host Morris Innovative  at 6 p.m. Dade then travels to Murray County on Jan. 14.
