Political Debates
Do you plan to attend any of the political debates planned throughout the county in the coming weeks?

The Georgia Department of Labor announced last week that the unemployment for December in Northwest Georgia increased slightly to 7.2 percent.

Dade County got good news from the report however as their rate dropped slightly to 5.4 per cent, down from 5.7 per cent in November.

While Dade County rates were falling Catoosa and Walker counties had their rates hold steady at 4.6 per cent and 5.7 per cent respectively.

Chattooga County has the highest unemployment rate in the area at 8.8 percent.

According to the Georgia Department of Labor the Northwest Georgia rate was up primarily because the number of new layoffs, represented by initial claims for unemployment insurance benefits, increased to 10,961. That was up from 7,455 in November.

According to the release from the department claims were up in several areas, including manufacturing, construction, administrative and support services.

Claims were also up in trade, transportation and social assistance and health care.

Georgia’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was down from December’s rate of 7.4 per cent to January’s 7.2 per cent.

The rates are significantly better than those of 2013 when the December rate was 8.7 per cent.
