The Dade County Lady Wolverines were looking to advance to the AA state tournament on Saturday afternoon when they faced the Model Lady Blue Devils in their first 7AA region tournament game.

The winner would qualify for the State Tournament while the loser would see their season come to an end.

The Lady Wolverines had faced the Lady Blue Devils twice during the regular season and came away on the losing end each time.

Dade took an early lead, 4-0 three minutes into the game and while Model cut that lead in half late in the quarter, a half court shot by Tori Gass as the buzzer sounded to end the first quarter gave them a 7-2 lead.

The Lady Wolverines went into a shooting slump to start the second quarter as the Lady Blue Devils took their first lead of the game with 3:26 remaining in the first half 9-7.

Dade managed only four, second quarter points but trailed only 15-11 at the end of the first half.

The two teams swapped the lead several times in the third quarter with one team appearing to take control only to see the other team rally back each time.

By the end of the third quarter the Lady Blue Devils still held the lead, 30-23.

At the start of the fourth quarter the Lady Wolverines scored 10 of the first 12 points to regain the lead 33-32 with just over a minute remaining in the game.

A Lady Wolverine basket by Sarah Reid with less than 10 seconds remaining put Dade up 35-32.

Then with five seconds remaining a time out by Model set up a three point shot from deep in the corner that got nothing but net to tie the game 35-35 and send it to overtime.

The Lady Blue Devils proved to be too much for Dade in the overtime as Hailey Gass had fouled out in the fourth quarter and the already thin Lady Wolverines were battling fatigue as well as a deeper team.

When the final buzzer sounded Dade saw their season come to an end with a heartbreaking 43-39 loss after victory was so close.

Senior Marjorie Bonner led the Lady Wolverines with 14 points followed by Reid with 12 and Tori Gass with nine.

Reid was playing for the first time in over two weeks due to an illness and played really well.

Coach Randy Watson and his staff deserve a lot of credit for a fine season filled with adversity. They were in just about every game all year and were so close to advancing to the state tournament but it just wasn’t meant to be.

Congratulations on a good season and we look forward to next season with all but two of the Lady Wolverines returning.
