Marjorie Bonner led the Lady Wolverines with 14 points in Saturday's region tournament game against Model. Dade fell to the Lady Blue Devils 43-39 in overtime.

The Dade County
Lady Wolverines were looking to advance to the AA state tournament on Saturday
afternoon when they faced the Model Lady Blue Devils in their first 7AA region
The winner would
qualify for the State Tournament while the loser would see their season come to
Wolverines had faced the Lady Blue Devils twice during the regular season and
came away on the losing end each time.
Dade took an
early lead, 4-0 three minutes into the game and while Model cut that lead in
half late in the quarter, a half court shot by Tori Gass as the buzzer sounded
to end the first quarter gave them a 7-2 lead.
Wolverines went into a shooting slump to start the second quarter as the Lady
Blue Devils took their first lead of the game with 3:26 remaining in the first
only four, second quarter points but trailed only 15-11 at the end of the first
The two teams
swapped the lead several times in the third quarter with one team appearing to
take control only to see the other team rally back each time.
By the end of
the third quarter the Lady Blue Devils still held the lead, 30-23.
At the start of
the fourth quarter the Lady Wolverines scored 10 of the first 12 points to
regain the lead 33-32 with just over a minute remaining in the game.
Wolverine basket by Sarah Reid with less than 10 seconds remaining put Dade up
Then with five
seconds remaining a time out by Model set up a three point shot from deep in
the corner that got nothing but net to tie the game 35-35 and send it to
The Lady Blue
Devils proved to be too much for Dade in the overtime as Hailey Gass had fouled
out in the fourth quarter and the already thin Lady Wolverines were battling
fatigue as well as a deeper team.
When the final
buzzer sounded Dade saw their season come to an end with a heartbreaking 43-39
loss after victory was so close.
Bonner led the Lady Wolverines with 14 points followed by Reid with 12 and Tori
Gass with nine.
playing for the first time in over two weeks due to an illness and played
Watson and his staff deserve a lot of credit for a fine season filled with
adversity. They were in just about every game all year and were so close to
advancing to the state tournament but it just wasn’t meant to be.
on a good season and we look forward to next season with all but two of the
Lady Wolverines returning.
