Cherie Swader was appointed as Interim School Superintendent last Thursday after it was announced that Superintendent Shawn Tobin's retirement would be effective immediately.

Last Thursday the Dade County Board of Education held a special called meeting for personnel and it turned out to be surprising and short.

After calling the meeting to order the Board went into executive session and returned minutes later to hear Superin-tendent Shawn Tobin’s recommendations.

His first was the resignation of his wife, Mary, a special education paraprofessional at Dade Elementary School, effective immediately.

Tobin’s next recommendation was his early retirement, effective immediately. “We have mutually agreed to my early retirement," he stated.

The Board then approved those recommendations on a 4-1 vote with David Powell voting against the recommendations.

Board member Jeff Forester then made a motion to appoint Cherie Swader as Interim Superintendent and Johnny Warren seconded the motion. All Board members voted in favor.

Board Chairperson Carolyn Bradford gave the press a written statement after the meeting that read:

“Both the Board of Education and Mr. Tobin has mutually agreed to arrange for an earlier retirement date for Mr. Tobin. This will allow the Board of Education to immediately appoint an Interim Superintendent and move forward the process of choosing a full-time Superintendent. We certainly appreciate Mr. Tobin’s great service to this school system and community.”

When asked the amount of the buyout it was stated that an Open Records Request would be necessary for that information.

Swader took over immediately and will serve until a replacement is found or hired as Superintendent. She has served in the Dade County School system for many years as a teacher, principal and assistant superintendent.
