Berean Church on Sand Mountain was vandalized last week when thieves removed the copper wiring out of the church's air conditioning units. The church will have to replace all A/C units with damage estimates to be between $25,000-$30,000. Anyone with information on who took the copper is asked to call the Dade County Sheriff's Department at (706) 657-3233.

Vandals hit a local church last week and the result was thousands of dollars in damages.

The vandals are responsible for destroying several air conditioners that were connected to the Berean Baptist Church on Sand Mountain. The thieves were after the copper inside the units to sell.

Dade County Detective Don Hicks said, “I think they are looking at $25,000 to $30,000 to get the system up and running again.”

This kind of theft can be lethal because electricity was still being supplied to each unit, according to detectives. They also believe those responsible knew exactly what they were doing and were fully aware of the risk they were taking.

According to Hicks, “They knew what to cut, what places to cut to keep from getting shocked or electrocuted.”

Stealing copper from air conditioners is becoming common place in Dade County and detectives believe the usual perpetrators are drug addicts who are desperate to get high.

“These people need money to buy drugs so they destroy a unit worth several thousand dollars to get $50 worth of copper,” Hicks said.

Dade County authorities desperately want to get the person or persons responsible for these thefts off the streets.

If anyone has information about this case that may lead to an arrest and conviction, they are asked to call the Dade County Sheriff’s Office at (706) 657-3233.
