Vandals hit a
local church last week and the result was thousands of dollars in damages.
The vandals are
responsible for destroying several air conditioners that were connected to the
Berean Baptist Church on Sand Mountain. The thieves were after the copper
inside the units to sell.
Detective Don Hicks said, “I think they are looking at $25,000 to $30,000 to
get the system up and running again.”
This kind of
theft can be lethal because electricity was still being supplied to each unit,
according to detectives. They also believe those responsible knew exactly what
they were doing and were fully aware of the risk they were taking.
Hicks, “They knew what to cut, what places to cut to keep from getting shocked
from air conditioners is becoming common place in Dade County and detectives
believe the usual perpetrators are drug addicts who are desperate to get high.

authorities desperately want to get the person or persons responsible for these
thefts off the streets.
