Political Debates
Do you plan to attend any of the political debates planned throughout the county in the coming weeks?

Summer Kelley

I am blessed to live in Dade County and in my childhood home on Sand Mountain with my husband and four children. One of our biggest reasons for living in Dade County, being closer to family being the number one reason of course, was the opportunity to have our children grow up in the community and school system I have always loved and been so proud of.

I continue to be proud of Dade County and its schools and have had the pleasure of working and meeting several wonderful, caring teachers and staff members. I would like to be a part of helping this school system as it continues to be a great system where children can grow and learn and become contributing members of our community. That is why I, Summer Lawson Kelley, have decided to run as a Republican for the District 2 seat on the Dade County Board of Education.

Raised by parents who were educators in Dade County, I have not only seen the school system as a student, but also through the eyes of teachers and staff and understand many of the challenges they are facing. I have four children in the school system – one in high school, one at the middle school and two in elementary school – and have served as a secretary for PTO at Davis and know the problems and issues that parents and students face as well.

My children participate in chorus, band, soccer, 4-H, FBLA, Student Council and HOSA so I recognize the importance of extracurricular activities. I have two children who receive services through the special education program and I am familiar with special education issues and needs. I have one child who will be graduating next year and I understand the necessity of adequately preparing students for college, vocational school or a career.

As a journalist with the Dade County Sentinel and now The Mountain Valley Independent, I have attended nearly every school board meeting since April of 2006, minus a year as I entered new employment, and I have had the opportunity to observe how the board interacts with the public and to personally speak with many people about their concerns regarding Dade County’s schools.

I would like to see a more open school board with easy access for the public to receive and share information – a more transparent Board of Education. I would like to see more discussion and interaction between members of the school board and the community. I would like to see more input and involvement in the school system by the community. These first three things could be accomplished fairly easily and are the natural course that the school system should be taking as it moves toward becoming a public Charter School system.

I would also like to see problem areas regarding dangers and problems from outside school buildings but also from within the walls and other students addressed effectively and efficiently with priority given those areas of greatest risk. I would like to see all playgrounds in the system be handicap accessible and friendly. I would like to see a College and Career Academy created through the collaboration of the school system, board of education, local business and industry and local colleges and technical schools.

Please help me make these goals a reality for our school system. I am asking for your support and your vote in the General Primary. You can contact me at votesummerlawsonkelley@gmail.com or like the Vote Summer Lawson Kelley site on Facebook for any questions, thoughts or concerns.

Thank you.
