Political Debates
Do you plan to attend any of the political debates planned throughout the county in the coming weeks?

Limestone Valley RC&D has been conducting research in Dade County on the water quality of the Lookout Creek watershed. The research is being conducted through a state grant.

Dan Huser of the Limestone Valley Resource Conservation and Development, RC&D) Council reported to the Dade County Commissioners at last Thursday night’s meeting on work he had been doing in Dade County.

The Limestone Valley RC&D, a Northwest Georgia non-profit organization, was awarded a grant from Georgia to study the Lookout Creek watershed, most of which lies in Dade County.

The goals of the grant include writing a watershed management plan and building community momentum so that after its completion the plan can be used as a guide to help accomplish water quality improvements.

The completion of the grant may lead to a lot more funding for projects in the local community.

After much research and stakeholder consultation, a draft Lookout Creek Watershed Management Plan is completed and available on line at http://limestoevalley.org/lookout-creek-watershed/.

This plan outlines a framework on how to improve water quality through voluntary conservation projects on private land, while providing a financial incentive to do so.

Once this plan is approved by the state, Limestone Valley will pursue grant funding to implement the plan. If the proposal is funded, we would acquire funds to assist with cost sharing on failed septic systems in the area, cost-sharing on mutually beneficial agricultural conservation projects, and cost-share on storm water projects in urban areas with flooding issues.

These projects would be a benefit to both landowners and homeowners within the Lookout Creek watershed, while also reducing the bacteria and sediment pollution that contribute to the issues in Lookout Creek (as identified by the state).

Anyone having questions or comments regarding the plan or the current grant can contact Dan Huser of Limestone Valley RC&D Council at (423) 544-9076 or dhuser.lvrcd@gmail.com.
