A large crowd was on hand Saturday at American Legion Post 106 in Trenton to honor one of Dade County’s fallen soldiers.
Marine Lance Corporal William Taylor Richards who was killed in Afghanistan in June of 2010 was honored with the dedication of the naming of Highway 11 from the Alabama state line to the Tennessee state line as the William Taylor Richards Memorial Highway.
Dade County Executive Ted Rumley presented Richards wife Emily with the Resolution passed by the Georgia Senate earlier this year. He also presented Emily with a flag that was flown over the State Capital.
Post Commander Bill Lockhart said, ”It’s a bittersweet moment but the Legion is honored to be able dedicate a portion of the County to the hero who gave his life for us.”
After the ceremony the band that Richards often played with performed for the large crowd.
A motorcade then proceeded to the Alabama state line and proceeded to the Tennessee state line and included many local residents as well as the Rolling Thunder and Patriot Guard motorcycle riders.
Richards was a 2008 graduate of Dade County High School and left behind a wife and daughter.
