Dade County resident Betty Jean Mundy, 53, was arrested Saturday morning in connection with a fatal hit–and–run that occurred last Friday afternoon on St. Elmo Avenue in Chattanooga.
Mundy is charged with leaving the scene of an accident involving a death.
Witne-sses said that Mundy’s SUV was speeding and hit a scooter driven by 56–year–old David Bruce around 4:30 p.m., Friday afternoon. The impact sent Bruce’s body crashing onto the hood and windshield. The SUV never stopped.
A few moments later Hamilton County police received another report of an accident involving the same SUV. Mundy had hit another vehicle and then crashed into a utility pole on Tennessee Avenue.
Upon the police investigation of Mundy’s SUV the windshield was found smashed with hair embedded in it that appeared to match Bruce’s hair.
The police report says that Mundy’s speech was slurred and she had trouble standing. Police found prescription drugs in her vehicle.
Mundy told police she had consumed Xanax and muscle relaxers before she struck Bruce’s scooter. Police said she had pill bottles in her car containing hydrocodone and muscle relaxers and unidentified pills in her purse.
A blood sample was taken and pending the results Mundy could face more charges.
She is scheduled to appear in Hamilton County General Sessions Court Jan. 2.
